Editorial: The Case Against Phish [Idolator]
In 2005, at the height of Coldplay’s popularity, The New York Times published a scathing essay by Jon Pareles. “The Case Against Coldplay” argued that the self-pity of the Chris Martin-fronted band was calculated, and that its grandiose sound was built to prey on an unsuspecting populace. On the eve of Phish’s first summer tour in years, kicking off with a show at Fenway Park in Boston, Dylan Stableford offers a similar argument.
Guests: An Audio History of Phish and DMB [Hidden Track]
Love both bands, love one & hate the other, tolerate one & swear by the other, regardless of your allegiances there’s no denying the long history that Phish and the Dave Matthews Band share.
Fenway: Make Way For Phish Fans [Boston Herald]
Baffled that a quartet of Vermont hippies can sell out Fenway Park on Sunday and then sell out the Comcast Center in Mansfield six days later?
To help mystified Sox fans understand why Fenway will be defiled as Phenway on Sunday at the opening of Phish’s summer reunion tour, we’ve put together a FAQ on the world’s biggest jam band.
Video Games: Phish Blat Boomin’ on Rock Band [Hidden Track]
The music of Phish has been used in movies and for tv shows but the quartet’s music has never been featured in a video game… until now.
New Album: Phish New LP Due July 28th [Rolling Stone]
For their new album, the band’s first since 2004’s Undermind, Phish is working in a New York City studio with producer Steve Lillywhite, who oversaw the band’s 1996 disc Billy Breathes. The band’s own JEMP Records will release the still-untitled album on July 28th.
Features: The Return of the Phish Phenomenon [Boston Globe]
At 10 a.m. on Jan. 30, Live Nation opened its online box office for the highly anticipated summer tour of Phish, the four-piece Vermont-based rock outfit that reunited in March after a five-year hiatus. Within minutes, millions of requests flooded the site and every single seat for all 15 concerts had sold out. Less than 24 hours later, tickets to the band’s May 31 kickoff show at Fenway Park were trading hands for as much as $1,600 a pop on Craigslist and StubHub. Just like that, the tribe of Phish heads had spoken.
Review: No Casualties in BSO, Phish Clash of Styles [Baltimore Sun]
Musical worlds collided Thursday night when rocker Trey Anastasio took the stage with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop. There were no casualties.
Fenway: His Name Could Only Be [Boston Sports Blog]
To get you in the mood, here’s a list of Red Sox player nicknames – each based on a Phish song or cover – inspired by acquaintance TJ Morton, who sent the original roster in an early morning email hours after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. It worked because, when you think of it, there are few more passionate fan bases than Red Sox and Phish followers. And now, thanks to the tour opener at Fenway Park, it has a bit more relevance.
Page McConnell: Lowell Thompson Expands With Band [Burlington Free Press]
Steve Hadeka is one of the most in-demand drummers in Burlington, with experience in The Lonestar Chain as well as the bluesy Seth Yacovone Band and atmospheric rockers The Cush. Bass player Kirk Flanagan (Blowtorch) rounds out the group, and Thompson has even brought in some high-powered guests for the new disc, including Grace Potter on vocals, Mark Spencer of Son Volt on lap steel and Page McConnell of Phish on keyboards.
