Previews: Phish Summer Tour 2010 – Leg 2 [Hidden Track]
If Phish comes out and continues to kill it, playing their standards with extra awesomeness and sprinkling in well-played bust outs and new covers, they will fill arenas this fall/winter and sheds again next summer. If they come out and resort back to their “standard” approach to shows, they could again see a quick and steady dropoff in interest and ticket sales.

These upcoming Berkeley shows represent the Red Rocks of 2010 – a multi-night party in one of music’s hallowed venues to kick off the second leg of summer. Last year, the band’s improvement between Leg I and Leg II grew so significant, it became virtually inexplicable.

Songs: The Red Red Worm [Dog Gone Blog]
Throughout the years, many songs have taken the helm as the jam vehicle that defines a particular era. Some have adapted to the band’s ever-evolving musical style, transforming with the band as they grow; while others have become jamless standards. Some remain in the rotation to this day. Others have gone by the wayside. But one song that has remained a constant jam vehicle since its debut is the tale of our friend the red worm, “Piper”.

5.7.94 – The Bomb Factory, Dallas, TX – Tweezerfest, The Bomb Factory, whatever you want to call it… the fact of the matter is that this show absolutely KILLS, and I don’t think anyone could ever get sick of it. Once the band drops into Tweezer early in the second set, they don’t stop weaving in and out of songs until they reach Tweezer Reprise over seventy minutes later. Thankfully, this is a Live Phish release so you can listen to it in all it’s soundboardy goodness.

Gear: How Mike Gordon Gets That Cactus Sound [Source Audio]
6/23/2010 – The night that we brought Mike an updated model of the Soundblox Bass Envelope Filter, Phish tore through a cover of Robert Palmers ‘Sneaking Sally Through The Alley” that featured a righteous jam at the end that let the BEF shine. Bonus: see Mike stomp his BEF, which sits on the floor for this show, at about the 2:54 mark during their Doobie Brothers-esque vocal jam.

Early Ices also feature Fishman standing on his throne doing “the Fishman dance”, and anytime you get to see Fish dance it’s worth the price of admission. (see videos below) Always a crowd pleaser, this song can vary in accuracy and even sometimes speed, but otherwise rarely strays from the composition. However there are a handful of Ices that standout small jams worth listening to. So please lunge in and join me here, under the icy cracks, as we explore the breakdown section of this excellent Phish song.

Trey Anastasio: Big Red Guests at Green’s Event [Hidden Track]
Last night at an event titled “The Songs of Amanda Green,” Anastasio played guitar and sang with his new friend at NYC’s Birdland. Broadway actors Jenn Colella, Ann Harada, Andy Karl and Howard McGillin also contributed their talents at last night’s performance as Matt Gallagher led a band of Broadway musicians in backing the vocalists.

Songs: The Evolution of Phish Songs [Online Phish Tour]
Guyute- This song debuted on 10/7/94 but wasn’t released until “Story Of The Ghost”, despite its popularity among fans. Many believe this song was written early in Phish’s career, Trey and Tom shelving it until fully developed, according to Phish.net. I can see why- the composition is complex and there is no jamming at all during the, approximately, ten minute anthem about the ugly pig. Phish played this song 19 times since its debut before it got pulled from rotation for almost a year, reportedly to be reworked. The last performance before the short hiatus was 12/29/94, a fan favorite and spot on performance of the song. When it resurfaced on Halloween ’95, the crowed reacted with a roar, and it turned out to be basically the same as before. The intro was shortened slightly and they added whistling after the first verse.
