Halloween: Hotels Filling Up on Phish Rumors [The Desert Sun]

Rumors: Will The Band Return to the Hampton Coliseum? [Daily Press]

Whispers circulating locally and nationally suggest that jam band kings Phish may return to Hampton Coliseum before year’s end.

A Hampton city government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Phish is definitely coming back this year — probably sometime in the fall.

LivePhish Issues: Where’s The Bass? [Phish Thoughts]

The main gripe from fans across the country has been the relative absence of bass in the LivePhish mix.  While varying from show to show, Mike has often been so low in the mix that his eclectic- and essential- offerings can barely be heard.  Because Trey and Mike play so closely off each other, enhancing each other’s lines, this causes Trey’s playing to make much less sense in the context of a “three piece band.”  It wasn’t until I listened to various audience tapes, matrix mixes, and “remastered” soundboards, that I realized how much the boards were lacking.  A lot of these jams were much better than reflected by the band’s own releases!

Contest: Win a Free Mike Gordon Bobblehead [Jamtopia]

Of all the lot-merch on Summer Tour, the piece that generated the most buzz had to be the Trey bobblehead, one of which Jamtopia gave away back in April.

Assuming you liked that one, you’ll probably want to add the latest and greatest Phish bobblehead to your collection: it’s bassist extraordinaire Mike Gordon.

Halloween: Suggestions For Phish’s Cover Album [MTV]

Phish are not the sort of band to buck tradition, so it should be assumed that they’ll be playing through a classic this Halloween. But what record should they tackle? Here are a few suggestions.

Led Zeppelin, IV
Phish have dabbled in Zeppelin before (”Moby Dick” cropped up a bunch during the turn of the millennium), but the epic quality of IV suits the band well. After all, doesn’t every Phish fan desire to hear a 25-minute version of “Stairway to Heaven”?

When you made the decision to reconvene, how long did it take you to recapture that chemistry that’s so productive?

I actually do remember having a dinner at a restaurant, the four of us. We hadn’t all four of us been alone together in a number of years, and sometime during the dinner I went to the bathroom to call my wife and said, “I understand what’s so special about this band just by the way we’re speaking to each other.”  There’s such a level of communication and mutual respect that was evident before we ever even picked up the instruments again.

What led to the breakup?

I think we just need to shake things up: people’s personal habits, the group habits, the way that the organization was run — which was awesome, but everything had to be looked at from a difficult angle, and it had to be deconstructed before it could be reconstructed.

Festival: An Open Letter to Phish [The Elektron]

Phish Festival: Phish Three Day Halloween Festival [Hidden Track]

Phish.com has just been updated with a graphic advising fans to save the dates of October 30, 31 and November 1 for what will be the first Phish-thrown festival since Coventry in August 2004. As of now, three states in the graphic representing the United States that appears when you visit Phish.com have been blacked out. Those states are Idaho, Oklahoma and West Virgina. Some fans have speculated that as time passes more states will be blacked out leaving only the state where the festival will be held.

I Called It: Name That Tune [Jambands]

At any concert, the music is the ultimate reason for attending the event, yet knowing the name of the songs certainly adds to the evening’s fun. Being able to predict – to see into the immediate future, to call out the name of a song as it develops out of a jam, or simply out of nothingness is an impressive feat, and a source of pleasure for fans of Phish, Widespread Panic, moe., The Grateful Dead and The Disco Biscuits and many other band. Correctly predicting the next song often shows experience, foresight and a finely tuned ear.

Remembrances: My 20 Year Love Affair With Phish [Dan Taylor]

It recently occurred to me that 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of my love affair with four guys from Vermont otherwise known as Phish.  I’d like to cover two topics in one piece here: how I was introduced to the band, and my experiences with them, and a primer on what to listen for when listening to Phish.

Summer Tour: Phish Summer Tour Highlights [Examiner]

With the first leg of the summer tour behind us, I decided to take a moment and compile some of my favorite moments.

Phish came out firing on all cylinders, kicking the tour off in famed Fenway Park. Following the road south Phish found themselves headliners at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, where they invited Bruce Springsteen on stage for a rendition of “Mustang Sally,” “Bobby Jean,” and “Glory Days.”

Venues: Georgia Theatre - Rising From The Ashes [JamBase]

There’s Tipitina’s in New Orleans, the Exit/In in Nashville and the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA. Not necessarily the biggest and shiniest venues in town, but hallowed buildings loved by all who’ve been inside and cultural centers where music fans convene on a nightly basis to enjoy live music in a welcoming environment amongst friends and neighbors. These are the places where everyone from the bartender to the intern working the ticket booth could talk your ears off for hours about the bands coming to town. These are not just the places you go to see your favorite band but the kind of place you go just because it’s the thing to do.

Soon enough, the nostalgia faded and the music stood on its own. The band is sober, tight, and each one’s virtuosic skills on their instruments, as well as amazing improvisation skills that have enabled them to play different takes of the same songs for over 20 years, served to remind me that Phish delivers on a wide range of sound—be it piano-driven ballads, bass-y funk tunes, meandering guitar jams, experimental opuses (and they can literally cover just about anything). They aren’t just a jam band—they’re way too skilled as musicians for such a generalization, especially now as they are regaining their show legs.

Songs: Summer Tour Debuts [Phish Thoughts]

As we turn the page on a new chapter of Phish history, one of the most exciting facets of this era is the plethora of new songs that were introduced in June.  As we begin our reflections on the past tour, I thought that their new songs would be a good place to start.  Showcasing diverse songwriting and various musical styles, the band has come out with a slew of new material- with more waiting in the wings.  Let’s take a look at each song one by one, in the order of their summer premieres.

Phish 3.0: Tour Coverage Overviewby Andy Gadiel [HeadCount]

Now that Phish is back and touring, there are many – maybe too many – ways to tap into their world. But as summer tour takes a month-long breather, let’s catch our technical breaths and run down what went down online over the past month.

Songs: Listen to the New Phish Album (Sort Of) [Jamtopia]

Okay, so the post title may be a bit misleading, but hit play below for an early preview of some of the tracks presumed to be on the new Phish album.

Rumored to be called “Party Time,” the as-yet-untitled album is scheduled for release on July 28th some time in August. It’s the first Phish studio release since Undermind back in 2004.

In a fitting Father’s Day tribute that borrowed a joke from a 1992 version where family, friends, and crew members jumped around in a giant bathtub during the performance, the Vermont foursome’s children sat center-stage in a miniature tub for the song’s nonsensical lyric chant, “Somebody’s jumping in the tub with your brother!”

But what Phish does better than many bands out there is form a cohesive unit, almost becoming one, playing some of the tightest, hottest music on the touring circuit. Now that they have exorcised whatever demons they had either together or individually that led to their dissolution a few years ago, they truly seem focused on putting out some of the best music they can.
