Yasgur’s / Bethel: Bethel Couple Decide Not To Stage Event [Record Online]

BETHEL – Roy Howard and Jeryl Abramson have decided to cancel their planned event and turn away potentially thousands of people planning to camp this weekend on their Yasgur Farm property during the three-day Phish concert at nearby Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Abramson said the couple can not risk additional fines from the town. The town of Bethel has fined them $25,000 alledging they violated a 2007 injunction by advertising the event, and issued four violations for illegal camping already.

“I can’t do this,” Abramson said. “We can’t afford paying the violations. We have received four already and that is just the beginning. They are going to nail us to the cross.”

Bethel: Bethel Orders Couple to Pay $25,000 Fine [Times-Record]

BETHEL – The Town of Bethel has ordered Roy Howard and Jeryl Abramson to pay a $25,000 fine and cancel a planned mass gathering with two dozen live bands during the Memorial Day weekend.

Howard, who with his wife Abramson defied the town for decades by hosting Woodstock reunions on Max Yasgur’s former homestead, signed a consent order in 2007 that permanently prevented him from holding – or even advertising – parties or reunions on the property without first getting the needed permits.

He and Abramson recently began selling tickets on Facebook for a party on the same weekend that Phish is holding a three-day festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the 1969 concert, roughly three miles from Roy and Jeryl’s property. The couple have been hawking tickets for $50 a head for the weekend, mentioning they won’t turn anyone away and have room for 1,300 cars.

In a little less than three months, Phish kicks off its Summer Tour 2011with a three-night stand at the gorgeous Bethel Woods amphitheater in Bethel, NY. This marks Phish’s first appearance at the shed, which was featured on our 2009 list of previously Phish-less venues where we’d like to see the band play. Not only are Phish fans pumped up for the quartet’s first trip to the town that hosted the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969, but area residents and businesses are excited as well.
