Reviews: Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB @ Terminal 5 [Billboard]

Nineteen months and over 50 Phish concerts later, Anastasio brought his TAB unit — plus a familiar horn section — to New York City’s Terminal 5 on Feb. 16, for an evening that celebrated the past and a promising future.

Unlike Phish, where Anastasio’s leadership role goes unspoken, there’s no question that he is the ringmaster of TAB. While this allows him a certain freedom to plume his feathers as his supporting cast recedes into the background, he also revels in the glow of his carefully crafted ensemble. During each of the band members’ solos and audience-energizing crescendos, Anastasio jumped and clapped along like a proud big brother.

Lists: Hot Tours 2009 [Billboard]

Phish lands at No. 2 on the Hot Tours list with totals reported from the group’s brief fall tour that kicked off on Nov. 18 at Detroit’s Cobo Arena. Promoter Live Nation also reported box office totals from the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati (Nov. 20-21) and the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia (Nov. 24-25). The band plans to close out the year with four concerts at American Airlines Arena in Miami on Dec. 28-31.

When you made the decision to reconvene, how long did it take you to recapture that chemistry that’s so productive?

I actually do remember having a dinner at a restaurant, the four of us. We hadn’t all four of us been alone together in a number of years, and sometime during the dinner I went to the bathroom to call my wife and said, “I understand what’s so special about this band just by the way we’re speaking to each other.” There’s such a level of communication and mutual respect that was evident before we ever even picked up the instruments again.

What led to the breakup?

I think we just need to shake things up: people’s personal habits, the group habits, the way that the organization was run — which was awesome, but everything had to be looked at from a difficult angle, and it had to be deconstructed before it could be reconstructed.

Phish w/ Springsteen: Mike, Trey and Page Talk Bonnaroo Sit-in [Billboard]

Phish bassist Mike Gordon says the previous night’s Springsteen show was the first Boss performance he had seen outside a couple of songs at the Pete Seeger 90th Birthday Party last month. He now says he sees why Springsteen is so highly regarded. “It’s great to know that it’s not all hype or anything, there’s such a solid musician and songsmith standing there, and then to be so nice and such a gentleman at the same time,” Gordon says.

“What really blew me away was when we were in the practice room playing one of his songs and he strolled on in,” Gordon continues. “We had planned to practice with him, and he started kind of dancing to one of his songs we were playing. When he walked in, his guitar playing and his singing and his presence, it became clear to me why he became a megastar. Because he instantly brought this sense of melody and just bold statements out of his singing and guitar playing, it was undeniably great. It was a real joy to play with him.”
