When scribes from the outside world – bloggers, journalists, etc. – write terribly inaccurate pieces about our beloved band, we react swiftly and in droves, like a swarm of angry bees or a pack of hungry lions.

Bringing Kids to Shows: Children of All Ages [Jiggs Lot]

One of the most interesting and heated debates I have participated in is whether or not you should bring your kids to a show. This subject is amazingly divisive and has brought out the intensity usually saved for political bickering.

Editorial: Phish Is Not The Disco Biscuits [PhishNet]

Lately it seems like all of the criticism and hopes for summer tour come from one place, the endless cry of, “Phish need to jam more in 2010!”  I understand that.  There’s nothing like a great Phish jam.   However, in all of the calls for the return of improvisation, what’s being forgotten is that only on a few tours was Phish really about major improvisations.

For the vast majority of their career, big jams were exceptions, the occasional treat that made the tour.  The problem is that those shows are the ones that get played over and over again down the road, so people think that that was more of the norm.  I know that I listen to the Bomb Factory a lot more than I put in 5/22/94.

Editorial: Quitting Phish [Jiggs Lot]

So, to those who are quitting, I say thank you.

I respect you for realizing that this is not where you want to be this summer, or in life. So it goes. I, however, will continue to save money when I can, and prepare and plan by taking days off of work. I will still plan and try to see runs of shows that are near us. I will go to the shows we can afford to. Maybe it will continue to be easier to buy tickets.

Tickets: 16 Phish Dates Still Not Sold Out [OnlinePhishTour]

It is clear ticket sales are slowly dwindling for Phish.  Last summer Phish sold out all their venues, including both nights at the massive Alpine Valley within hours if not minutes.  The only venue that didn’t sell out the same day was Toyota Park–which eventually did sell out.

The fact that the northeastern venues are not sold out yet is an eye opening fact.  If they can’t sell out in the northeast, where can they anymore?  CMAC, both a special and very cool venue in NY, couldn’t sell out, along with the Phish summer staple, Walnut Creek.  Deer Creek, a must hit stop for any serious Phish fan on a summer tour, didn’t sell out either.  This is all shocking, I’m not sure what to make of it.

Editorial: From One Phan to Another [PhishandtheDead]

Phish Phans have in many cases created a highly divided class gap that to me doesn’t hold true to the images most fans would like to give off.  To me it stinks. To all Phans this is a story of acceptance, and appreciation.

Editorial: Just Have Fun, Man [BeLOW Me]

The way things ended in 2004 were so awful that you have to feel good for these guys, and at the same time for the fans who are so supportive. When the band expressed how much fun they were having in the “northeast” the fans just loved it. We love having them around, and love partying with them.

There will certainly be more great moments during their shows from now until the end of summer tour.

With all of that said, there have been no great shows at all, and here’s why.

Editorial: The Case Against Phish [Idolator]

In 2005, at the height of Coldplay’s popularity, The New York Times published a scathing essay by Jon Pareles. “The Case Against Coldplay” argued that the self-pity of the Chris Martin-fronted band was calculated, and that its grandiose sound was built to prey on an unsuspecting populace. On the eve of Phish’s first summer tour in years, kicking off with a show at Fenway Park in Boston, Dylan Stableford offers a similar argument.

Editorial: Phish 1998 Mulled Over at Length [Wax Banks]

It all felt like something was being lost, namely the oddity and uniqueness of Phish’s place in contemporary music. If the band had been playing good modern music, that’d be one thing, but while tributes to the Beastie Boys, Ween, and Nirvana might make sense, butchering their insipid radio songs isn’t the way to go about it.

Editorial: A Fan of Phish Fans [Daily Press]

The fans spent a lot of much-needed money in our area, and we should want to hear about them in the newspaper the whole three days they were here, and we should hope they come back soon.

So, once again, to Phish and their fans, thank you so much for visiting us. Hope to see you soon. From “a fan of the Phish fans.”

Editorial: Why We Need Newspapers [ZZYZX]

Blogs are great, but we need people who as their full time job tracking stories down and finding out if they’re true, people who actually know who to call to find out these things and a chance of having the call returned, or we’ll just get buried in rumors. Yeah it’s funny when it happens about this (or as a commentator said Doctor Who), but it does make you wonder. And re the comment, crappy papers are just a step above blogs in that sense; I meant why we need real newspapers :)

Hampton: Some Thoughts on THE Band [BeLOW Me]

This is all just a guess, conjecture if you will, but when I hear the music it lacks ego, as my friend put it to me. The ego of Phish came from Trey. The band’s ego was not really there, and I don’t blame them, especially Trey, at all. It’s just a matter of the circumstances.

I think in a world gone pretty sour it is time for something really great to happen, and I’m hopeful this band can give us just that. Unfortunately, I won’t be there, but for all of my friends who will be, and for all of the people who started seeing shows in ’99, or later, I’m hopeful they can take everyone back to that higher level.
