Trey Anastasio: Trey 08/02/2008 Official Audio Newport, RI

One of the most surprising names to appear on the 2008 Newport Folk Festival roster was Phish’s guitarist and primary songwriter, Trey Anastasio. Within the context of Phish, Anastasio concentrated on his electric guitar technique, drawing on rock, funk, country and jazz influences within a highly improvisational context. Following the 1995 death of one of Anastasio’s primary influences, Jerry Garcia, and the subsequent demise of the Grateful Dead, Phish experienced a huge surge in their following. Within a brief time, Phish found themselves the new torchbearers of the jamband scene, with legions of devoted fans following their every move. The increasingly complicated logistics of touring that inevitably followed would eventually take its toll, leading to a two-year hiatus between 2000 and 2002, and finally to the announcement of their breakup in 2004.

New Year’s Runs: Phish New Year’s Run – Eternal Joy & Never-Ending Splendor [Hidden Track]

Nobody ever really knows what to expect when it comes to Phish, especially come New Year’s, but today we’ll take a look at history to highlight some of the great moments in years past and assess how similar elements could play out during this year’s festivities.

Videocasts: Dinner and a Movie – Episode 1 [Online Phish Tour]

Introducing Dinner and a Movie, a new video podcast where myself, Adam and Guy sit down to dissect a new Phish video clip each week.  Think of it as DVD commentary, except instead of some boring movie “director” talking about his “vision” (whatever those words mean) you have three certified experts (certification valid only in Vermont and upstate New York) talking about the types of faces Trey makes when he Trey-gasms all down his Trey-knees.   There may also be some very serious music discussing going on as well, depending on how sober Adam needs to be to operate his microphone (answer: zero sober).

Songs: Is Mike’s Song Trapped In Time? [Online Phish Tour]

My original intentions for this article were to compile my wishlist for the New Years Eve run at MSG. With “black Friday” in the rear-view mirror and Phish’s high holidays approaching, I thought I would discuss some things I hope we get during the upcoming four night stand. The problem is that atop my list is “Mike’s Song” – a staple in Phish’s catalog that has predominantly eluded fans during “3.0.” I have been craving a thick and evil “Mike’s Song” that would transcend the tune, but I continue to yearn. So my attention shifted from assembling a list of potential New Years gifts to examining “Mike’s Song;” a former improvisational champ that is now a shadow of itself. (I intend to put out a wishlist as we get closer to the mini run; however, let’s focus on “Mike’s Song.”)

Podcasts: Analyze Phish – Episode 3 [Earwolf]

Two episodes in and Scott Aukerman still doesn’t like Phish. What are we going to do about it? We’re going to bring in Adam Scott, we’re going to stick to the jams, and we’re going to see what happens! Join us on this tour through the cosmos (sorry) and continue to leave your drug advice in the forums.

Tour Dates: Trey Anastasio Orchestral Tour [Hidden Track]

In February Phish front man Trey Anastasio will launch his first-ever orchestral tour, which kicks off on February 9 in Atlanta and also includes stops in Pittsburgh (2/14), Denver (2/28) and Los Angeles (3/10). Each performance will be conducted by Scott Dunn and is set to feature “classic Phish songs and solo Anastasio compositions,” according to a press release.

2012Phish Won’t Return to Watkins Glen Next Year [Hidden Track]

Phish front man Trey Anastasio threw fans for a loop earlier this year, when he told Rolling Stone that 2012 would be, “a less busy touring year” for the group. What 2012 will hold for Phish hasn’t become any clearer since the publication of that article in June, but we do now know of one event that won’t take place – a return to Watkins Glen International race track. Track official Ryan Lake told local paper The Leader that, “we are a motor racing facility and have decided to focus on our racing events, as well as the wine festival, in 2012.” [Article via@Pete716 Tweets - Pt. 1Pt.

Remembrances: Hampton ’97 – A Look Back, Part One [Phish.net]

The opener in hindsight is a tremendous treat, the debut of The Rolling Stones “Emotional Rescue.” A song that only Mike could properly handle his shift between baritone and falsetto tones pays a nice homage to a legend like Jagger. It’s also a glimpse into the vocal range Mike has always possessed. In 1997 his vocals felt more like a goof than a talent, but fourteen years later you can hear the potential and see the connection to the extremely strong vocal presence he maintains now.

Lists: 10 Notable Changes in the World of Phish Since Bittersweet Motel [Hidden Track]

6) Digital Cameras: The gag with Brad Sands intentionally cutting the heads off of fans seeking photos with the band members would never fly in the binary world. Since Bittersweet Motel, not only have we lived through the popularization of digital cameras, but now the majority of concertgoers have one on their phone.

Lists: Box This – OPT’s Archival Release Wish List [Online Phish Tour]

7/19-21/1998 (Audio in compilation: 7/19 Ghost, Limb, YEM; 7/20 Gin, Drowned, Makisupa, Halley’s; 7/21 Ghost, She Caught the Katy)
Summer ‘98 is often brushed off by vets that claim it’s the year of gimmicky covers and ambient jams. However, I argue that July of ‘98 is one of the best months of Phish ever. They take the funk from ‘97, only now it’s cleaned up and mature.

Everyone already knows about the crazy Gorge ‘98 shows (and the recordings are not bad), so let’s go to the following nights that have been overshadowed, starting with 7/19 at Shoreline and finishing with 7/21 at Desert Sky.

Cactus: Review – Mike Gordon Band @ Portsmouth Music Hall [Hidden Track]

After an initial run through the song, the improv that developed quickened with a pace and fury that left my jaw on the floor. While I shudder to think that I can’t make it out of my first comments without making a comparison to Phish, this jam found a space that harkens back to truly great You Enjoy Myself jams. At one point Mike even settled into a groove that some might argue was a direct nod to Phish classic. Sonic vibrations blasting the bodies in the front rows, it was hard to NOT be blown away.

Listening Suggestions: Listening Library – November 2011 [Andrew's Hitz]

Towards the end of this set we witnessed some of this magical communication when they segued between two of their songs, Weekapaug Groove and The Mango Song. This segue reminds me of Larry Bird’s best no-look passes from my childhood. You can watch them over and over again and the only possible explanation is that they had been planned and practiced for months. And yet they weren’t.

Interviews: Mike Gordon Reboots [Jambands.com]

But I also like to be realistic. If I want to write a lot of songs and see which songs and which jams are allowing the band and the audience to reach nirvana sooner, then my band is the place to do it because there is just time to try things over and over and over again, a lot.

“He’s not big on talk,” said Anastasio in his introduction. “He got us through the event with one single goal — having the greatest impact. Donors underwrote costs, so 100 percent of proceeds went to flood recovery and rebuilding efforts.” And by 100 percent he meant money raised by tickets as well as merch.

Interviews: Mike Gordon Ready For The Music Hall [Seacoast Online]

“With Phish, everything works so well — from the music, to the personality, to the business end of things,” said Gordon. “It works so well, I hardly need to do anything — which is both a blessing and a pitfall. I’m the type of person that really likes to work, and I really like to be creative. In order to have fun exploring different kinds of songs and songwriting, different grooves and music, I need to be able to do a lot of it — performing, writing, and otherwise. I know from experience how deep music can be if you let it. It’s good to hold on to that passion — the inner quest that is your soul vibrating to different frequencies. For me, with Phish, there’s only so much room for me to do that. I love getting into the Zen of my role as the bass player in Phish, but I also need to have my own music career that allows me to get very deeply into the musical exploration that’s important to me. I’m very excited because I feel like I’m just scratching the surface. It’s been a really great scratching. It’s fun and challenging to make music happen with a group of people that you didn’t grow up with, but still click anyway. It’s fun to sort out the feel and to flow with this new bunch of personalities.

Remembrances: MSG Memoirs – Carini > Wolfman’s [Phish Thoughts]

Combining a eerie feel with a hard rhythmic focus, the band was creating some of their most engaging music of the year on the very first night of the New Year’s Run. Fishman altered his beat and the rest of the band followed along, creating an harrowing and danceable texture that spoke to the exact elements that I crave for in Phish music. Drifting from these patterns to a more ambient-drenched experiment, the methodical pocket and cymbal crashes never stopped as Trey and Page dug into space-aged effects that brought an enhanced sense of the occult back into play.

To update a story we first reported in September, Phish guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio has just entered the studio with acclaimed producer Peter Katis (Interpol, Fanfarlo, Frightened Rabbit) to work on a new solo album. According to Katis, Trey is setting out to do “something totally out of left-field for him.” While it isn’t clear yet whether this album, which is due out next year according to Katis’s management firm, will feature all of his current TAB septet, Natalie Cressman revealed on Twitter that she will be taking part in the sessions.

Interviews: Catching Up With Mike Gordon [Hidden Track]

It’s easier with Phish to jump back in because we have the 28 years of experience and I guess that’s what also makes it fun with my solo band is because we don’t have that, we end up throwing caution to the wind and it’s even more unexpected from not having so much history. But with Phish, I know there’s a consistency that is going to be there – these days anyway. I know it’s gonna feel good. I know that when we play four nights, there’s going to be a couple of those that I really love, or certain sets, so there isn’t really any trepidation going into it.

Interviews: Rocker / Actress / Blogger Carrie Brownstein on Phish [Austinist]

One more question. And this one from fans of your NPR blog that are dying to know: are you still listening to Phish?

[Laughs] Not lately. Not lately, but I will say this – every once in a while I have this kernel of pride that swells up because I’ll hear somebody talking about Phish or I’ll hear somebody reference Phish and I’ll feel like I know what they’re talking about, and I have a little bit of insider information. And I saw one of the guys–I did this Phish meet up for the whole thing and I met people. And I saw one of the guys and I felt like it was seeing a famous person. Even though he’s just a Phish fan, I got really excited. He was… in Portland with his wife and I literally just followed him around the isles hoping he might remember me, but he didn’t. Or he didn’t acknowledge it. But I remembered him. And so, I guess to answer your question I’m not listening to Phish all the time but that experience had an indelible effect on me and I will always love it.

Halloween: Under The Covers – The Musical Costume [Online Phish Tour]

While some would argue that the musical costume isn’t really a stage antic, I would point to the band’s freedom to change the way people think about live shows and clever ways of toasting their influences as their own “antics”. Halloween proves that stage antics don’t have to be ridiculous or over the top, they just have to be uniquely Phish.

Cactus: Marco GRABs Mike Gordon For Burlington Guest Spot (VIDEO) [Hidden Track]

Phish bassist Mike Gordon has been making the most of his time off from touring by sitting in with jam stalwarts the Spin DoctorsJackie Greene and now old pal Marco Benevento within the past few weeks in his hometown of Burlington. Marco, along with bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Andy Borger, is smack dab in the middle of a four-week residency at Burlington’s Radio Bean coffeehouse and invited Cactus out for the start of the second set. Gordon replaced Dreiwitz for a jazzy version of Green Onions (Booker T. and the MGs) and Benevento’s intense cover of Deerhoof’s Twin Killers that included teases of Rhapsody In Blue and Bathtub Gin.

Editorials: Pop The TAB and Drink It Up [Hidden Track]

Funny how often the best things in the world of Phish and the Trey Anastasio Band, affectionately known as TAB, simply go unnoticed. In chatting this past weekend with Hidden Track Editor extraordinaire, Scott Bernstein, about HT’s 5th Anniversary and the 1st of Postcards From Page Side, we were both scratching our heads on the lack of TAB coverage from this mini-tour that just wrapped up, making this week’s column a no-brainer as to what to cover. I caught one TAB show this tour, on the eve of my 31st Birthday, with a large crew of friends at Montclair, New Jersey’s Wellmont Theatre.

Remembrances: Phish’s Spectacular 1994 Blowout at Kent State [Patch.com]

I went after Phish not too long after that survey went out, and on Sept. 16, 1994 we made them a formal offer of $37,500 plus 85 percent of net profits to play in the MAC Center on Saturday, Nov. 12, 1994 and Phish was cool with it and by Oct. 6 we had a signed contract between Phish and Kent State University. We also got 20 percent of the money from all of the merchandise sold at the show which is big, so it had the potential to generate more money for the University than anything I’d ever seen.

Lists: The B List – Nine Phish Song Title Swaps [Hidden Track]

4. Microdot -> Mike’s Song

Most tunes written at the beginning of Phish’s career were penned by Anastasio, so when bassist Mike Gordon brought a song to the band they simply called it “Mike Wrote That” or “Microdot.” Trey announced this original title from stage on October 17, 1985 and at some point shortly after that the title morphed to Mike’s Song. The rest, as they say, is history.

Burlington: Trey Anastasio – After The Flood [Burlington Free Press]

Trey, normally a loquacious fellow, didn’t speak a whole lot during the show, but did note that he, Markellis and drummer Russ Lawton played the second-ever show at Higher Ground, in the old Winooski location 13 years ago. ”Our next song will be a 13-year-long jam,” Trey said, and the crowd cheered. Instead, he and the band launched into what he called a “world premiere,” a tune called “Snake Head Thumb,” which began with a bluesy guitar intro befitting a song with a name like that and the esoteric lyric “There’s a man I know with a snake head thumb/Just walk by and your body goes numb.”

Tour Recap: Super Ball IX -> Essex In Review [Phish.net]

IT did not last long enough! Phish played quite well at SBIX and on the second leg of their Summer tour, and it was tough to see the tour end in Colorado. But Vermont’s misfortune from Hurricane Irene inspired Phish to play a benefit show in Essex on September 14, a webcasted show that raised over $1.2 million for flood relief efforts, and also gave fans, particularly those in Vermont, a special performance. It was Phish’s first Vermont show since Coventry, and one of only a handful of benefit shows that Phish has ever performed. It was also an appropriate way to conclude the Summer’s impressive musical achievements: generously, warmly, and with a familial vibe near the green mountains where Phish began.
