Influences: Phish Approached Peter Gabriel About Lamb Lies Down [RS]

And then Phish – they do these projects where they take an old record and do it. I had a conversation about The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with them at one point.

Wow. They wanted you to sing it with them?
Yeah. They were thinking about it. That didn’t go anywhere, but those were the only times I sort of thought about it.

Rock Hall: Phish Inducts Genesis [Phish Thoughts]

Their musical performance entertained all, as the multi-faceted “Watcher of the Skies” opened the night with a healthy dose of musical drama. Decked out in suits and tuxedos, the band nailed the intricate piece and its psychedelic eccentricities.

Rock Hall: Genesis Enters Rock Hall in NYC Ceremony [Associated Press]

Genesis was inducted by Trey Anastasio of Phish, whose band paid tribute to both incarnations of Genesis by performing “Watcher of the Skies” and “No Reply at All.” The new inductees were missing Peter Gabriel, the theatrical lead singer whose departure was the dividing line between the band’s two styles.

Anastasio recalled buying Genesis albums as a teenager. He called the band “rebellious, restless and constantly striving for something more.”

“Every musical rule and boundary was questioned and broken,” he said. “It’s impossible to overstate what impact this band and musical philosophy had on me as a young musician. I’m forever in their debt.”

We’ve got big news about Big Red this morning, as the former 70 Volt Parade lead singer will induct Genesis into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in New York City on March 15.
