Fish: Jon Fishman Leads World’s Largest Cowbell Ensemble [Hidden Track]

In a scene that would make Will Ferrell proud, the Burlington Free Press reports that roughly 1,600 cowbell-playing revelers lined Church Street in Burlington to form what Ben & Jerry’s claims is the World’s Largest Cowbell Ensemble. The ice cream makers put the event together to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Phish Food and to raise funds for Vermont Flood Recovery through the WaterWheel Foundation. Those assembled rang their cowbells along with four tunes performed by a  band fronted by Phish drummer Jon Fishman, one of which was Blue Oyster Cult’s (Don’t Fear) The Reaper, natch.

Fish: The Fishmans To Open General Store [Bangor Daily News]

Briar Fishman said she and her husband came from Vermont six years ago and run Elderflower Farm, which produces blueberries, milk, yogurt, mozzarella and other cheeses. Starting later this month, they will be holding a Saturday farmers market outside the store. When the store opens next year they’ll be selling local produce, bulk goods and dry goods. They’re also planning a coffee bar, a juice and smoothie bar and a brick oven for flatbread pizzas.

Interviews: Jon Fishman Talks Influences [Washington Examiner]

Phish’s success can be credited to many factors.

Certainly, world-class musicianship is one. But it’s also important to realize that the free and easy jam band sound comes from a true study of music of all sorts.

“Everyone goes through phases of snobbery in their lives,” said Jon Fishman, Phish’s drummer and, of course, the namesake of the band. “Early in my life, I had favorites musicians and musicians I didn’t care for. As our careers professed, we are now the older guys on the block … and we inevitably want to [get to know and appreciate] many other musicians.”

You played with Jon Fishman earlier this year. Did you notice any stylistic differences on his side now that he returned to the stage with Phish?

I remember one quote from him this spring when he said, “I’m more into music now than at anytime in my whole life.” I thought that was amazing and very inspiring for me to think about. I think the guy is a very happy camper.

Interviews: Web Exclusive Part of Fish Interview [Modern Drummer]

MD: What did you learn from playing Exile On Main St.?
Jon: When Keith Richards says the blues guys were their heroes and everything they ever did was lifted from Chuck Berry and stuff, when you learn Exile On Main St., you really feel how true that is. They have managed not to over-intellectualize anything. They didn’t choke the life out of the music by doing anything fancy production-wise. The instruments sound good, they’re playing the shit out of the songs. No one’s going to accuse Mick Jagger of being overly technical, although he’s very aware of his technique. From everything I’ve heard, he’s a very cerebral guy, but he’s able to let go of all that and just play.
