Tour Recaps: A Bucket Full of Thoughts – 2nd Leg [Live Music Blog]

They certainly like to take the bull by the horns when opening a run or tour these days.  No longer can one confidently say “Just skip the opener.”  Inside the confines of the UIC Pavilion, Phish delivered arguably the best show of the summer so far.  The band weaved a second set compiled of one-word songs, with unique jam after unique jam, hitting on themes of Earth, Wind, Water and Hendrix’s Fire.  All this UIC show was missing was a cameo by Captain Planet.

Previews: A Preview of Phish Summer Tour Leg Two [Live Music Blog]

8/5-8/6 ~ The Gorge Ampitheatre
It’s called breath-taking for a reason. Walk over the hill, shed a tear, then let Phish take you on a journey amongst the cosmos. Never has a venue evoked such a strong reception from this author. In 2009 at the Gorge, Phish played arguably the best jams of their return year. There aren’t many replay-value (RV) shows from 2009 but the “Bathtub Gin,” “Sneakin’ Sally,” “Light,” and “Rock and Roll” from 2009 all evoke the “This is what I follow the band for” reaction. It had the same quality of 2003 and earlier gems in ’97 and ’98. I’ll take another stretched out “2001″ second set opener! With the band at peak form, and most likely rehearsing as they did for the Bethel run (some of which contained the best jams of the first leg), I wouldn’t bet against these shows taking on a different feel than your average “opener.” There are very few things one can count on — Death, Taxes and Phish at the Gorge. How about another “Hood” in the dark or maybe a fog machine “Steam” for it’s West Coast debut?

Camden: Phish in Camden Review, Photos, Videos, Downloads [Live Music Blog]

Overall, Phish’s Friday night performance in Camden was an uneven affair, with a few interesting highlights and lots of good energy, but lacking the flow and thematic improv we’ve all grown to love. It seems like the show mainly suffered from odd song selection and a general impatience when it came to jamming. And those two factors seem to me to be two of the most important in terms of deciding an average Phish show vs. an amazing one.

#4: The Curtain With (7.12.00 – first since 9.24.88, 1178 shows)
Supposedly resurrected by the band at the behest of Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro during the Deer Creek run in 2000, this song will probably forever be associated with the horribly botched version at Coventry (which at the time, was to be the last song the band would ever play). Thankfully, the song has since been given a third shot at life, as Phish redeemed the song by slaying their 2.0 demons when they returned to the Red Rocks last summer, and have played several outstanding versions since.

#4: 12.30.99 Light Up Or Leave Me Alone (first since 8.13.88, 1140 shows)

A clever nod to the hellish traffic snarl down Alligator Alley, and by the time this song was over, all was forgiven.

Opinions: Phish Updates Taper Policy [Live Music Blog]

If one streamer’s quest for domination starts to overshadow the efforts of the tapers that attend the show and get home before they upload the final product to a sanctioned torrent sharing site, then I’d like to propose that we not try to screw this up for the rest of us. These are privledges, not rights, and they are not expressly given to us going forward forever and ever no questions asked. Technology may very well win here and we’ll likely still see streams pop up from time to time, but this is something the band is paying attention to and will likely find a way to prevent.

Telluride: Phish Run Spawns JVS Epidemic [Live Music Blog]

Step back, even if you’ve been to 100+ shows, and enjoy what this band has to offer nightly. Maybe we shouldn’t be so critical because they’ve never been about just one thing, and I think the horrible outbreak of JVS in the scene has a lot of us forgetting that. It’s the sum of all the parts — and Phish had one of the best two night stands in their 20+ year history. Ask anyone who was there, except maybe patient zero that started the Jaded Veteran Syndrome outbreak. And maybe Jeff Holdsworth.

Berkeley: Togas, Cookie Monster, Gumby & More [Live Music Blog]

With religious-like fervor surrounding the band’s return to the road stronger than ever, it’s no surprise such a vibrant community continues to spring forth with new creativity, technological innovation, and a willingness to invest in something they believe in. And perhaps more importantly — a willingness to show up to a concert and make a complete fool of themselves.

Novices: From Phish Novice to Expert – A Progress Report [LMB]

12.6.96 – The Aladdin Theatre, Las Vegas, NV

The whole notion of Phish in Vegas is pretty impressive given how big the band was getting at the time, and they must have been high as hell on adrenaline walking on stage for this one. To begin a show with Wilson > Peaches > Poor Heart > 2001 > Llama > YEM is actually just something we’d probably never see again given how a lot of those songs are center pieces for other flow elements of the shows we see from Phish 3.0.

5.7.94 – The Bomb Factory, Dallas, TX – Tweezerfest, The Bomb Factory, whatever you want to call it… the fact of the matter is that this show absolutely KILLS, and I don’t think anyone could ever get sick of it. Once the band drops into Tweezer early in the second set, they don’t stop weaving in and out of songs until they reach Tweezer Reprise over seventy minutes later. Thankfully, this is a Live Phish release so you can listen to it in all it’s soundboardy goodness.

Reviews: Trey Anastasio at Terminal 5 [Live Music Blog]

TAB has always been a forum for Trey to tool around with various solos and effects pedal pyrotechnics, so there were certainly moments of long-winded guitar wizardry throughout the band’s three-hour plus workout. But I was surprised at how well this version of TAB really gelled as a cohesive unit.

Webcasts: An Open Letter to Phish and Red Light Management [Live Music Blog]

After witnessing the evolving and ever-expanding online activity surrounding Phish’s recent reunion tour, I’m now thoroughly convinced that the Phish fan base is primed and ready for a high-quality and paid live video stream for the band’s next tour. If done properly and in innovative Phish fashion, it could create an untapped revenue stream for the band while allowing more Phish fans to engage with the band’s music – in particular those fans that can’t make it out to every show on tour.

Now I’ve been aware of the above spreadsheet for quite some time, but I just recently came across a new “Phish list project” that takes things to an even geekier level. This one is simply called Best Phish Jams and is a similar attempt to create a comprehensive list of the best possible jams and improv segments in Phish’s touring history. The project appears to be in its infancy according to this recent thread on Phantasy Tour.
