Mansfield: Review – Phish Offers Fantastic Effort at Great Woods [Hidden Track]

Prior to that last song, the energized Boston crowd successfully started an impromptu “Let’s Go Bruins” chant with the band providing musical cues and Kuroda adding his own lighting to the rhythm. Boston at its finest. The show closed with a segment of Halley’s Comet (sans jam), Meatstick and a Meatstick-laden Run Like An Antelope. Not content with the high energy finish, the band returned with yet another amazing version of Suzy Greenberg, featuring amazing piano work by Page, to finish off the batteries of the crowd.

Great Woods has always been a storied venue, last night it got a show worthy of that past. Fantastic effort.

The appeal of Phish: No band can do what it does.

Sure, clever arguments can be made for the Allman Brothers Band or Bruce Springsteen or Dave Matthews Band. But last night during “Divided Sky” at a packed Comcast Center show, the foursome coalesced into a singularity of sublime improvisation.

Guitarist Trey Anastasio’s licks danced Glenn Gouldstyle, bassist Mike Gordon deftly thumped out the low end, Page McConnell’s keys doubled melodies or jazz vamped and Fish bounced around his kit with subtlety and wisdom. No band performs anything like “Divided Sky.”

But then the band rolled up its sleeves and ripped up the end of its first set with a manic “Kill Devil Falls,’’ which set up a new song, “Dr. Gabel,’’ that sounded like a bit of Mod-ish Who. Anastasio commented on the sold-out house’s reception of the song and offered thanks by going back to the band’s early days for “Run Like an Antelope.’’

Great Woods: Moments In Mansfield [Phish Thoughts]

I left Great Woods scratching my head last night with a question that has grown significant in the flow of recent Phish sets – “Why does Trey keep cutting off jams?” In a very good show at Great Woods that could have been great, Phish got into two sections of improvisation, out of “Sneakin’ Sally” and “Light” that reached points of greatness when Trey singularly decided to lop them off before they came to an organic endings.
