Songs: Making The Case – Summer of ’89 [Phishnet]

Say what you will about Summer of ‘89 – it’s weak compositionally, it’s mushy and out of place at a Phish concert, its chordiness makes it musically unchallenging, it’s not manly enough, it’s unnecessarily sappy, it’s a too-intimate glance into private emotions… to me, those are all excuses. You don’t have to love the song, but to suggest that it’s bad because it’s different just seems disingenuous and uncharacteristic of Phish phans.

Satire: A Look Into The Future @ the Greek [PhishNet]

A 25-minute “Fikus” opened the show, featuring a sizzlingly soulful vacuum solo from Fish, as well as a jaw-dropping appearance by Carlos Santana for a seemingly never-ending, bloody-rager-of-a “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen/Black Magic Woman” jam.

Songs: I Want Mike’s Groove to Rage Again [Phish.net]

You love Mike’s Groove.  The thought has nevertheless crossed your mind in the last year why versions of Mike’s Groove since Hampton haven’t been much, if any, better than “average-great.”

Alpharetta: Tour Closer – Report [Phish.net]

Today I listened to the second set again at the gym and what I heard (set2 in particular) was very interesting in the sense that it was both tight and flubbed.  Lyrical passages (Waste!) were botched as well as some of the standard Harpua ending (Trey), meanwhile the improvisation (type I jamming mostly) was razor sharp, energetic and extremely coherent.  Off the top of my head I can’t remember an instance where this comes across so vividly.  I have always been just fine with flubs as long as I get penance via jamming and type II specifically, but these flubs do seem a lot more “lovable” if you will.  I guess knowing that they’re not drug induced and putting someone’s life in peril is reassuring.  I smiled and snickered on the elliptical: “don’t want to be SOMETHING”.

Analysis: Interesting! [Phish.net]

This is how it unfolds, without fail, as I review each show’s setlist. A show that opens with Vultures? Interesting! A show that features a bust-out? Interesting! A new and random cover that could be a one-timer? Interesting! A novelty show, such as the M show, GameHoist, or even the recent Saw It Again adventure? Interesting! The appearance of a song like Dogs Stole Things in a 2010 setlist is interesting, but in 1997, not as much.

Previews: Today in Not Yesterday (And Will Never Be) [PhishNet]

Let’s look at Time Turns Elastic. I’ve advocated for Time Turns Elastic before, but let me just highlight some of that here. Those noobs who makes smarmy jokes suggesting TTE is only for pee breaks annoy me. Time Turns Elastic is a musician’s wet dream: I dare you to try to count it out. It’s got definitive sections, much like Fluffhead. It’s got a happy ending jam a segment, like The Arrival. It’s got some fun, warm sections, like Reba. And some tough-to-figure-out, intricate composed sections a la Divided Sky. But for whatever reason, there is a large group that simply doesn’t like this masterpiece.

Editorial: Phish Is Not The Disco Biscuits [PhishNet]

Lately it seems like all of the criticism and hopes for summer tour come from one place, the endless cry of, “Phish need to jam more in 2010!”  I understand that.  There’s nothing like a great Phish jam.   However, in all of the calls for the return of improvisation, what’s being forgotten is that only on a few tours was Phish really about major improvisations.

For the vast majority of their career, big jams were exceptions, the occasional treat that made the tour.  The problem is that those shows are the ones that get played over and over again down the road, so people think that that was more of the norm.  I know that I listen to the Bomb Factory a lot more than I put in 5/22/94.

Miami: Anatomy of a Prank [Phish.net]

The key here is the magicians’ rule.  It’s all about setting expectations.  Phish actually set up the whole thing back in the first set of the run.  Trey kept mentioning that “I Didn’t Know” would have the final vacuum solo of the decade.  He repeated it three times – along with other silly concepts – to make sure that the idea stuck in our heads.  This would be the final vacuum solo.  At the time it just seemed like typical Trey silliness, but actually it was foreshadowing.

I came upon the randomest of shows—10/11/95, at something called the Chandler Terrace Ampitheatre in someplace called Chandler, Arizona. October 95? When’s the last time I even listened to a show from this month? It’s all about November and December. And some random venue in Arizona?

26th Anniversary: Help Celebrate the 26th Anniversary of Phish [Phish.net]

Wednesday night, the first of three shows at Madison Square Garden, will be the 26th anniversary of the band’s first gig, 12/2/83. A rapidly expanding movement of fans, originally organized via PhantasyTour, plans to sing Happy Birthday to You to the band as soon as the lights go down and they take the stage. A flyer will be distributed by fans on-site, and you are encouraged to print and distribute copies, as well.
