Essex Junction: Phish Vermont Flood Benefit – Essex Junction Setlist, Recap and The Skinny [Hidden Track]

Overall, this evening’s concert was a huge success and raised plenty of money for relief efforts. Musically, this was more in line with Outside Lands than Chicago or Denver.

Denver: Phish Dick’s Review – Night One [Coventry]

“Wow, all S songs,” I said to the girl next to me. She was too spun to notice. At that point, we tried to figure out the second set. Would the S theme continue? Was it prelude for Santana, who was rumored to sit in with the boys because he was playing Red Rocks the next two nights. Many moons ago, Phish played the infamous M set packed with M songs. Maybe we were getting inside their deviant secret — they are S&M freaks?

Outside Lands: Outside Lands Recaps by Charlie Dirksen [Phish.net]

IT has been said that one should know one’s audience before addressing them. After you have said your piece, ideally, your audience will appreciate your words — assuming you still have an audience at all. But when offering up $0.02 on a rock concert, particularly one attended by tens of thousands of people, many of whom were seeing or hearing the band for the first time, your words will disappoint someone. Phish, fortunately, did not disappoint many last night. They rocked Golden Gate Park in a way that few (now legendary) bands have ever done. In deference to the variety of perspectives of fans who witnessed Phish’s two-set headlining show at the Outside Lands Festival, though, I offer you three “recaps.”

The Gorge: Leg2 Kickoff – Gorge1 Recap [Phish.net]

This show is a definite keeper: a solid first set with a strong “Gin” plus a stand-out “Roggae,” and a second set with a genuinely Epcot “R&R” and a sequence from there through “Farmhouse” that is winner-winner tofu dinner. This wasn’t a good show “for a tour opener” – it is a straight-up solid Phish show with a fist-full of genuine thrill rides. Sweet.

Alpharetta: Alpharetta2 Recap [Phish.net Blog]

After fans gritted out a 50-minute mid-first-set delay due to an extreme storm, the band rewarded them with a string of greatest hits, each version essentially interchangeable with any other recent version. If not for a stellar version of “Timber” in which Trey totally raged, the most interesting part of tonight’s first set was when Trey started talking over “Mound” to inform the crowd of the impending weather delay. It was spontaneous, it was unexpected, it was different. it was interesting.

Phish doesn’t do anything poorly. Ever. They are meticulous in their planning and building their own streaming platform with nugs.net is an absolute win. People in the past have calmored for a partnership with iclips or spoken highly of the recent VEVO offerings, but Phish have maintained complete control and produced a great result. As far as the technical side of things goes, last night seemed to be even more rock solid than the shows over NYE. It’s the internet, you’re sure to encounter a few hiccups, but last night was well exectued and much appreciated. BTW, if you were one of the scumbags who was watching via a re-stream, seriously?

Darien: Phish Darien Setlist, Recap and The Skinny [Hidden Track]

Friend of HT Kristy Freeman has always been a huge fan of Phish’s version of Nellie Kane by Hot Rize and she took matters into her own hands to get the band to play the song. She enlisted the help of about a dozen friends who all held creatively decorated signs with Nellie Kane on them. Kristy’s plan worked as Phish opened with Nellie Kane to her delight. Nellie Kane wasn’t the only relatively rare song on tap for Darien’s first set. Mellow Mood, Buffalo Bill, Undermind, Ride Captain Ride, It’s Ice, Dog Faced Boy and Brian and Robert all saw their first action of 2011 in the 14-song marathon opening stanza.

Cuyahoga Falls: Blossom Recap [Phish.net]

What followed will be known in Phish lore as When Harry Met Sally and is a simply outstanding 30 minutes of music. The “Sally” jam is sublime. All four band members are locked in and the result is a truly unique, must-hear jam. “Sally” melted into a “Harry” -> “Have Mercy” -> “Hood” that is simply majestic. Trey wove the “Have Mercy” theme throughout the “Hood” jam finishing off a set that is among the best of 3.0. I prefer the previous night’s second set somewhat, but which one you like better probably depends more on the style of set you prefer. The fact that the “Slave” encore is reduced to near-footnote status speaks to its greatness. If I’m giving a rating to this show it’s probably a 7.0, a notch above Bethel2 earned almost entirely on the basis of the second set. But seriously, ignore the number. The important part is that the second sets from Pine Knob and Blossom are the two best sets if 2011 IMO and would hold up in any era of Phish.
