Organizers, law enforcement officers and fans agree: The three-day Phish Super Ball IX festival at Watkins Glen International was a huge success.

About 30,000 people attended the festival, said Richard Glasgow, tour manager for Phish.

“We all thought Super Ball IX went really well and we had a great time,” Glasgow said by e-mail Monday afternoon.

“Drowned” -> “Rock & Roll” – PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ - 6/29/00

This combo of classic covers was requested relentlessly this past week on Twitter, and it’s no mystery why. The band is clearly locked down and primed from the first bars of “Drowned”, and the jam moves effortlessly from idea to idea, never losing direction or purpose, before the band crafts an astonishingly impeccable segue into “Rock & Roll”. This version is a mustang – short from nose to tail but muscular, quick, and strong willed — owing in no small part to the rhythm section’s relentless propulsion throughout.

Richard Glasgow, Phish’s tour manager, said the idea of playing at Schuyler County’s famous racetrack has been brewing for a long time.
“Watkins Glen, we talked about this as far back as 10 or 15 years ago,” Glasgow said.

Active negotiations for The Glen to host its first major concert since 1973’s historic Summer Jam – which drew 600,000 fans for shows by The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers and The Band – had been taking place for the past two years.

“Who needs that nervous feeling; waiting for the band to take the stage?” he said when he returned to the grill. “The butterflies in your stomach. Calling the opener with your friends as the low clouds roll over the vast concert fields,” said Feder, flipping a burger on the grill as his son squirted him dead in the eye with a Kool-Aid-filled Super Soaker. “Those were the days.”

“I love you dear,” said his wife.

“Seeing that Ferris wheel light up the country sky as the wandering notes of a sustained Reba waft over the crowd and mingle with the smoke emanating from the vendors’ stands,” he said, as his children chased a squirrel up a tree.

“Yeah, but you’re here now, right dear?” remarked his wife.

“Of course I am honey,” he said.

Adjacent to the concert field is (the triumphant return of) Ball Square. In this village in the round, you will find an American Trilogy: three distinct time zones of our nation’s history. Witness an early American settlement (rally round the forge!), America in the Industrial Revolution (the factory is churning out costumery and masks for Sunday’s Super Bull Run – stop by to be a part of this special event), and The Future of America (which we have little information on as it hasn’t happened yet). In the center of it all is the Powerhouse, the festival’s mitochondrial generator of all of Super Ball IX’s power. A marvel of weirdness, an absurdist amalgamation of waterwheels and racecars, skyballs and rain cachements* – behold the Powerhouse!

There had been some concerns expressed by locals about the potential size of the crowd, as well as the party atmosphere Phish concerts are known for.

“But it won’t reach the 60,000-fan cap that we had put on it,” Yessman said. “It doesn’t look like it’s going to be the maximum capacity. So it shouldn’t affect our residents as much as they had feared, I think.” Yessman agreed that 40,000 to 50,000 was probably a good guess.

Watkins Glen: An Interview With Trey & Lars [Super Ball IX]

Trey: It felt great. And that brings me back to conversations with you and Russ and the band members a few weeks ago where I said I’d like to do that more, a lot more. And I know Mike and I talk about it a lot. I think everybody would. I loved intermingling the art and us onstage. And I would encourage more of that. I mean, you know, this year at New Year’s Eve we did this Meatstick thing with the dancers. But actually I know there’s one Super Ball idea which I won’t give away, but to some degree, the stage is going to be intimately linked with the festival grounds.

Lars: Yeah.

Trey: Which I think is incredibly exciting and cool.

So, Big Cypress was great. Nothing is ever going to match it, I mean, until the next amazing thing happens, I could describe looking out at these people, this audience that I’ve been staring at for 26 years or something in darkness, right, every night. And people are dancing and they’re delirious and they’ve been up all night. And the sun is starting to come up, oh my god – that was just the most bizarre thing because the sky was all pink.. But it was really just the looks on people’s faces, like when suddenly God started to turn on the lights at the end of the party. Oh man.

Lars: Wow, that’s a bittersweet thing.
