Syracuse: Hooked on Phish [Syracuse New Times]

Take the opening song Phish played at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Sunday, Nov. 22, simply called “David Bowie,” one of the band’s earliest songs that first debuted Halloween day in 1986. The lyrics consist of two repeated phrases: “David Bowie” and “UB 40.” Phish is the only band that could engage such inanity and still stir the crowd into revelatory bliss. The mantra-like quality of the song set the tone for the rest of the night as it seemed to corral everyone from wherever their daily trip led them to that point, and henceforth, it was a union of performer and audience.

Syracuse: Phish, Fans Find Joy in Visit to Fishman’s Hometown [Syracuse.com]

“We’re playing tonight in a venue where he saw five of his first concerts,” Anastasio told the cheering fans. After first announcing that Fishman had graduated from James-DeWitt High School, Anastasio fixed it the Jamesville. He also told everybody that Jon’s dad, Dr. Leonard Fishman, was in the house, and asked anybody who’d gone to the orthodontist give a cheer.

Plenty of folks yelled.

It was that kind of joy that bounced back and forth between the fans and Phish.

Anywhere and anyplace the reunited Phish touches down for a show, it’s an event.

Back in the day, as the Vermont-based band was getting its jam legs, one of Phish’s stops used to be the Orange Grove on Westcott Street. That’s where the fans first got to see Jon Fishman and his mother, Mimi “Mama Phish” Fishman, both play the vacuum cleaner.
