Debates: Tales of Mental Tangle – Webcasts [Online Phish Tour]

The announcement of Phish’s webcast being brought back for the two-night Tahoe run has unleashed a heated debate within the Phish community.  While some are thrilled to have another opportunity to see the frantic four in their living rooms this summer, others feel that the band plays far better without the added pressure of entertaining fans seated at home in their underwear.  We at OPT like our debates the same way we like our guitarist’ hair–red hot.  That’s why we brought the esteemed Eric Wynman in to throw down with our own Zim in an epic battle of webcast worthiness!

Opinions: The Influence of Webcasts [Phish Thoughts]

Phish announced yesterday that they will be webcasting their two sold-out shows from Lake Tahoe on Monday and Tuesday next week. Fans from across the nation—and the world—will be able to tune in for the twin bill for only $24.99, exponentially increasing the 7,000 person audience with a virtual cast of thousands. But is this a good thing for the integrity of the show? Does a show being webcasted alter the band’s performance? Does it change the way Trey arranges the setlist in his mind? Maybe so, maybe not.

Webcasts: My Watershed Week of Online Video [OnlineVideoWatch]

But what made me really say, “We’ve arrived,” was watching a live stream of the Trey Anastasio Band concert from The Pageant in St. Louis, delivered by iClips.net.

Words don’t really do the experience justice. Dolby Digital handled the audio decoding and enhancements (can’t wait for a 5.1 audio stream, but I digress), filling my (NYC sized) living room with ambiance. But iClips delivered video for three hours nearly flawlessly.

Webcasts: An Open Letter to Phish and Red Light Management [Live Music Blog]

After witnessing the evolving and ever-expanding online activity surrounding Phish’s recent reunion tour, I’m now thoroughly convinced that the Phish fan base is primed and ready for a high-quality and paid live video stream for the band’s next tour. If done properly and in innovative Phish fashion, it could create an untapped revenue stream for the band while allowing more Phish fans to engage with the band’s music – in particular those fans that can’t make it out to every show on tour.
