Remembrances: A History of Phish’s Summer Festivals [Jambands.com]

Superball IX is part of a noble Phish tradition: the summer festival. Tracing the rise of the band and then their sudden collapse, these events are defining moments, each a document of its era. They may not have been the best shows, but they always were the most memorable event of the year. Between the art and the surprise sets and the random encounters that happen when thousands of people camp together, the Phish festivals transcended the concept of being a concert. Phish had a chance to create their own events and in doing so redefined what an event could be.

Remembrances: NYE Runs Past w/ ZZYZX, Pt. 2 [Jambands]

Today Jambands.com concludes its two-part look at Phish’s New Year’s Run past with David Steinberg, the original unofficial Phish statistician (aka Timer). The quartet opens its five-night New Year’s Run tonight at Worcester’s Centrum, now known as theDCU Center. The itinerary includes three nights at Madison Square Garden, featuring their first New Year’s Eve at the venue since their return from their first hiatus on December 31, 2002. TheMockingbird Foundation board member (a charitable organization setup by fans to distribute funds generated from the Phish community) was at the first Phish New Year’s Eve event (12/31/89), and has been back ever since.

6) Phil Lesh – last three songs and encore 9/17/99

Phil also ran the risk of overstaying but ultimately two things worked in his favor. Everyone was still excited over the Warfield run a few months previous and the show – like Bob Weir’s appearance – was in the Bay Area. In addition to the music he played, Phil gets bonus points for actually jumping on the trampolines during “You Enjoy Myself.”

Remembrances: ZZYZX’s First Show [Adventures of Starman]

It was at that moment – and perhaps later when Poster jumped off of, “the white… corduroy… shelf,” that I was hooked. I didn’t know it yet, but the whole, “It’s not Fluff,” thing caused me to buy Junta at the merch booth hoping that “Fluffhead” was the song that I loved. It wasn’t, but I soon fell in love with “The Divided Sky,” and the rest, well I’m about to fly to California tomorrow to see them yet again, 20 years later.

So thank you Seth for inspiring me to go see Phish. Thank you band for choosing to play “Harpua” that night – although I bet there were nights where you might have wished you closed the show with “David Bowie” and I never got quite so into you – and continuing to interest me throughout these years.

Editorial: Why We Need Newspapers [ZZYZX]

Blogs are great, but we need people who as their full time job tracking stories down and finding out if they’re true, people who actually know who to call to find out these things and a chance of having the call returned, or we’ll just get buried in rumors. Yeah it’s funny when it happens about this (or as a commentator said Doctor Who), but it does make you wonder. And re the comment, crappy papers are just a step above blogs in that sense; I meant why we need real newspapers :)
